Greta Gerwig will be in charge of the new adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix.
The writer and director of Barbie officially has “at least” a two-film contract to revive the beloved novels, this time on the streaming platform. four years after Netflix announced a multi-year partnership with The CS Lewis Company, The New Yorker confirmed rumors that had been circulating for a few months that Gerwig, a three-time Oscar nominee, would be attached to direct the “Narnia” movies.
The news was shared in a wide-ranging interview with Mattel executives and Gerwig’s team for The New Yorker focused on Barbie and the ever-growing quest to find more projects to adapt.
“Greta and I have been building a career very consciously,” Gerwig’s UTA agent Jeremy Barber told the publication. “Her ambition for her is not to be the biggest director, but a big studio director. And Barbie was a piece of intellectual property that resonated with her.”
Gerwig most recently appeared acting in the film Netflix of Noah Baumbach white noise and finished production Barbie, which he directed and co-wrote with Baumbach. Gerwig’s earlier literary adaptation, little women, was nominated for an Oscar. In addition, she is a co-writer of the live action film Snow White from Disney, starring the revelation of West Side Story, Rachel Zegler.
The Chronicles of Narnia was brought to the big screen for a film trilogy that ran from 2005 to 2010. The first film, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, grossed more than $745 million worldwide. The fantasy film, based on Lewis’s 1950 novel of the same name, starred Liam Neeson (who gives voice to the lion Aslan), tilda swinton and James mcavoy.
Netflix’s 2018 deal marks the first time a single company has secured the rights to all seven “Narnia” books.
