“My maternal grandfather was Jewish, so I have a real connection,” revealed the Brit. Although he wasn’t brought up directly Jewish, he still feels that way. “My grandfather always made sure we followed certain traditions, and when I went to bar mitzvahs and weddings he made sure I wore a yarmulke,” he recalled.

His faith also shaped his culinary skills. “I used to watch my grandmother make the chicken soup, the matzo balls and the latkes. It’s always been about family getting together, so I’m part of the community, which I’m proud of,” he told the audience. Both Judaism and Christianity are important to Beckham. Several tattoos of Jesus adorn his body.

Beckham also revealed to presenter Ben Winston which of his many hairstyles he regrets the most today. “The only thing I regret is that I had cornrows in all the photos I took with Nelson Mandela,” he said. “I had them done on Saturday and on Monday I flew to a game with the England team in South Africa. I met and greeted Nelson Mandela. And the image I have of Nelson Mandela is me, like me holding his hand with cornrows in my hair,” he recalled.
