As of January 1, 2025, the German art historian succeeds Klaus Albrecht Schröder, who has not applied again after a quarter of a century at the helm of the house. Secretary of State for Culture Andrea Mayer (Greens) announced this decision on Wednesday. Gleis prevailed against 19 interested parties.
Ralph Gleis, born on August 9, 1973 in Münster, is no stranger to Vienna, as he was curator at the Wien Museum between 2009 and 2017, from where he moved to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, where he is currently director. Gleis is considered a specialist in classical modernism and 19th-century art. He wrote his dissertation at the University of Cologne on history painting in the 19th century. His professional career took him to the German Historical Museum in Berlin, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn before moving to Vienna.
