Talks failed: British and Norwegians are fighting over fish after Brexit

Brexit makes many things more complicated – for British fishermen, for example. They can hardly catch the fish themselves, which are in demand in their country.

According to a report, Brexit will lead to a herring and mackerel race between Norway and the UK. The background is therefore the failure of the talks between London and Oslo about access to the coastal waters of the other country in the spring.

The two species of fish migrate to British waters in September. That is why Norwegian fishermen are now trying to catch as much as possible in August, even though the fish are actually too young, the Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported on Monday. Fisheries Minister Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen regretted the development. It was “an indirect consequence” of Britain’s exit from the EU, reported the NRK.

With Brexit, Great Britain also left the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy. The government in London said it wanted to revive the local fishing industry – and make access to British waters more difficult for European fishermen.

But for British fishermen, this is increasingly turning out to be a boomerang. One problem is that most of the fish caught around the UK coast are not on the menu in the UK, but are exported to the EU – this is being made more difficult by trade barriers. At the same time, by leaving the EU, London has also left joint agreements on access to waters in Norway and other countries where a large number of the species used for fish and chips such as cod and haddock are caught.
