The not uncontroversial British health service NHS celebrates its 75th anniversary. Prince William and Princess Kate chat with a pioneer.
Aneira Thomas has a place in British history thanks to her mother’s perseverance – heir to the throne Prince William and Princess Kate now know that too. The 75-year-old is the first baby born after the NHS was established in 1948. “The doctors who delivered me kept looking at the clock and looking at mum,” Thomas told the royal couple at an NHS 75th birthday get-together. “She waited to hear the word ‘push’ but all she heard was, ‘Wait, Edna’.”
It worked: “Nye” Thomas was born on July 5, 1948 at 12:01 a.m. – the NHS was one minute old. “Timing was everything,” she said in an interview, as reported by the BBC on Wednesday. It also owes its name to the then new service: it was named after the NHS founder and then Health Secretary Aneurin Bevan. She later worked as a nurse for the health service – as did her four sisters.
At a tea party at London’s St Thomas Hospital, William and Kate thanked NHS workers for their service. They decorated little cakes to raise funds for the NHS.
