Two months after the lavish coronation of King Charles III. in London’s Westminster Abbey there was now a second, smaller ceremony in Scotland. Charles and his wife Camilla have been in the country for several days to celebrate Holyrood Week, which is held in early July each year. There are several celebrations throughout the week including a garden party in the park at Holyrood House. The palace is the official residence of the monarch in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.
For the Scottish coronation of Charles there was first a procession from Edinburgh Castle towards St. Giles Cathedral. A thanksgiving service was then held in the cathedral. Charles was presented with the Scottish crown jewels – the “Honors of Scotland”: the crown of Scotland, a sword and a scepter. Unlike the coronation in London, the crown was not put on Charles’s head. After the service there were 21 royal gun salutes and aerobatic displays from the Royal Air Force flying over Holyrood House.
