Responding to a question about how Rodriguez had died, the 51-year-old said: “Someone sold him fentanyl pills that they knew were mixed, but they still sold them.”
“So to all these people who keep fucking buying and selling this shit, my son is gone forever.”
The New York police are investigating the death as a possible overdose, according to local media, and several US media have reported that the young actor was found nearby with white powder and drug paraphernalia.
Speaking after his grandson’s death, De Niro said he was “deeply distraught” and that family members are “so grateful for the condolences” but asked “that we please have privacy to grieve the loss of Leo.”

Drena wrote yesterday in tribute to her son: “My beautiful and sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my womb. You have been my joy, my heart and everything that was always pure and real in my life.
“I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you. I don’t know how to live without you, but I will try to move on and spread the love and light that you made me feel so much being your mom.
“You were so deeply loved and cherished and I wish that only love could have saved you. I’m so sorry my baby, I’m so sorry @carlosmare. Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my dear child.”
Rodriguez had appeared in the film A Star Is Born which starred Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
Drena took the De Niro last name after the actor married his mother, Diahnne Abbott, in 1976. His parents were married from 1976 to 1988 and also have a son named Raphael.
