The hype surrounding TikTok is still going strong: the short video app is particularly popular with younger people. Some users are below the minimum age of 13 years. TikTok reports that almost 7.3 million accounts have been deleted as a result.
The video app TikTok has published figures in connection with violations of the community guidelines for the first time. It shows that TikTok deleted more than eleven million accounts in the first quarter of 2021. Almost 7.3 million of these are attributable to people who are presumed to be below the minimum age of 13 years. According to TikTok, this is less than one percent of all registered users worldwide. In addition, nearly 62 million videos were deleted for violating the Terms of Use or Community Guidelines during the same period.
Verification of age not possible
It is unlikely that the accounts that have been deleted represent the entirety of all under-13s. When registering, users must enter a date of birth and confirm that they are older than 13 years. However, the accuracy of the information cannot be verified. The report’s author, Cormac Keenan, explains that new techniques for confirming user age will be developed from the published figures.
The company emphasizes that users under the age of twelve can sign up for a special version of the platform that is geared towards their age group. This service is called “TikTok for Younger Users”.
TikTok works to improve child protection
Earlier this year, TikTok introduced new settings for users under the age of 18. As a result, the default account setting for users between the ages of 13 and 15 has been set to private and there are restrictions on who can download their videos and see their content.
