Fashion: Berlin Fashion Week has started

The models are styled and so are the visitors – everyone is waiting for the first official show of the week. Before that, Economics Senator Franziska Giffey opened the Berlin Salon.

Handbags made from recycled shoes, cashmere in summer and lots of denim: Fashion Week has opened at the Berlin Salon in the Kronprinzenpalais.

A total of 51 designers were represented at the group exhibition, as the initiator of the format and long-time “Vogue” editor-in-chief Christiane Arp said. In addition to clothing, perfumes, furniture and jewelry were also on display. The clothing shown is partly from the fall-winter 23/24 collection and partly already intended for summer ’24.

A small magnet of the group exhibition were the innovative handbags from the Haram label. All Amir, 27, pimps used sneakers – only to take them apart and put them back together again. “I just give them a longer life than they actually have.” The sneaker handbags are already a small success in New York and Los Angeles in the USA.

The bags also caught the eye of Economics Senator Franziska Giffey, who gave the opening speeches in the Berlin Salon. “My first reaction was, I don’t know if that really suits me, but I mean, I think it’s great. Make bags out of shoes. Brilliant.”

Sustainability is a top priority

Sustainability is already a top priority for the brands exhibited in the Berlin Salon – the labels are specifically asked about it using a questionnaire. Arp curated the brands that are shown at the salon – a lot was also a decision from the heart.

Fashion is also often about setting new trends. However, various brands did not even try to cater to certain trends. Instead, they tended to focus on timeless shapes, colors and fabrics in the name of sustainability. “I wish fashion was much more about style than dictation,” says Arp.

At Studio 163, cashmere is the fabric of choice, which designer Barbara Giandomenico says can also be passed on to the next generation. At Unvain by Robert Friedrichs, leather garments are only produced for customers on request.

Even before Fashion Week started, Franziska Giffey emphasized that Berlin Fashion Week would remain political. A number of Ukrainian fashion designers are part of the programme. Giffey described this on Monday as a “message of solidarity”. It all started with the Bobkova label by designer Kristina Bobkova. Straight cuts with floral details made up the designer’s very feminine collection. She herself wore a black, wide pants suit at the show in the garden behind the Kronprinzenpalais.
