James Cameron: He defends himself against “Titan” rumors

The “Titanic” director is not planning a film adaptation of the submersible drama in June: James Cameron defends himself against all relevant rumours.

James Cameron, 68, has responded to rumors he could be directing a film about the ‘Titanic’ submersible tragedy. He denied that on his social media accounts.

No talks about an OceanGate movie

On the three-time Oscar winner wrote: “I don’t normally respond to offensive rumors in the media, but now I have to.” He then added, “I am NOT involved in talks of an OceanGate film and never will be.” He also published the statement on his Instagram story.

The deep-sea submersible “Titan” from the company OceanGate imploded during a dive trip to the wreck of the Titanic on June 18, 2023, killing all five people on board. After that, speculation quickly arose about possible film adaptations of the tragedy. Above all, the “Titanic” director James Cameron was often mentioned.

Cameron lost a friend in the accident

He himself had also quickly commented on the accident. He told ABC News that many people in the community were “very concerned about this submarine” and that those responsible had been warned beforehand. The filmmaker added he was “shocked by the resemblance to the ‘Titanic’ disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned of ice ahead of his ship and yet, on a moonless night, he drove at full speed into an ice field, killing many people died”.

Cameron also has a personal connection to the accident, as he knew one of the victims very well. Paul-Henri Nargeolet, one of the leading experts on the “Titanic” wreck, was a friend of his. “It’s a very small community. I’ve known him for 25 years. The fact that he died in such a tragic way is hard to come to terms with.” Cameron has made 33 dives to the Titanic wreck. He not only directed the famous 1997 film about the ship, which sank after colliding with an iceberg on its maiden voyage in 1912, but also the documentary Ghosts of the Abyss.
