Musical director Mario Videla died at 84

Mario Videlaorganist musical director and founder of the Bach Academy of Buenos Aires, died today at the age of 84, as reported in a statement on Colon Theater.

Born in the province of Salta on March 17, 1939, the musician graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the University of La Plata in organ and choral conducting and completed advanced studies in Germany and the Netherlands.

Throughout his life, he gave numerous recitals as organist, harpsichordist and conductor; In addition to his work as an interpreter, he carried out various studies in musical pedagogy and musicology, which he reflected in didactic books on early music. At the beginning of the 70’s he was invited to participate in the Bach Festivals conducted in Buenos Aires by Kart Richter.

In 1982 and 1985 he performed with the Bach Collegium of Stuttgart directed by Helmuth Rilling, touring cities in Federal Germany, Prague, Warsaw, Krakow, Leipzig and Moscow.

In Europe he appeared in recitals at the Lucerne Festival, Rome, Madrid, London and Cologne; In Latin America she offered concerts in Caracas, Mexico, Lima, Quito, Sao Paulo, Montevideo and Santiago de Chile, making various recordings.

Professor emeritus, he was in charge of the chair of Organ, Gregorian Singing, Harpsichord and Methodology at the Manuel de Falla Municipal and Carlos López Buchardo National Conservatories.

Between 1976 and 2014 he served as artistic director of the Buenos Aires Music Festivals Association, in 1983 he founded the Bach Academy of Buenos Aires, of which he was director and with which he obtained solid recognition in Latin America through numerous commented concerts.

His most recognized awards and works

At the Teatro Colón he directed the “Misa in B minor”, the “Passions and Oratorios” by Bach as well as oratorios by Händel and Vivaldi; on several occasions he conducted the Chilean Chamber Orchestra and also the National Symphony Orchestra.

He received several distinctions, including the 1989 Konex Platinum Award in Classical Music, the Cross of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany in 2003, and the Gratia Artis Award from the National Academy of Fine Arts in 2010.

Since 1997, he has developed a Sunday program dedicated to Bach entitled “La Cantata del Domingo” for various radio stations in Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Chile.

In 1999 and 2009 he was part of the jury for the Konex Awards. In 2006, 2008 and 2014 she was a member of the harpsichord and organ jury at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig.
