Director of oppenheimer, Christopher Nolanis supporting actors and writers and taking a step back from film as the SAG-AFTRA and WGA union strikes continue.
During the London premiere of Nolan’s new film, the cast left before the screening as the SAG-AFTRA strike loomed. The filmmaker is now opening up about what the strike means by saying “It’s not about me.”
“No, absolutely. It is very important that everyone understands that this is a key moment in the relationship between the workers and Hollywood.Nolan told BBC News. “This is not about me, this is not about the stars in my movie. It’s not about me, it’s not about the stars in my movie.”
Actors and writers are speaking out against the studios to ward off the threat of artificial intelligence and call for better residual structure in the streaming age.
When Nolan took the stage at the London premiere of oppenheimerrecognized that the actors had to leave “to write their banners.”
“I have to acknowledge the work of our incredible cast, led by Cillian Murphy,” Nolan said. “The list is huge: Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and many more. … You’ve seen them here before on the red carpet. Unfortunately, they are going to write their picket signs for what we believe is an impending SAG strike, joining one of my guilds, the Writers Guild, in the fight for fair wages for their union’s working members.”
Oppenheimer’s first reactions
Early reactions to Oppenheimer hail the film as a “knockout” and Christopher Nolan’s “most impressive work yet.”
“I’m torn between being all coy and mysterious about Oppenheimer and just coming out and saying that It’s a total knockout that cracked open my brain like a nervous plutonium core and left me sobbing through the end credits like I can’t remember what else,” shared Telegraph film critic Robbie Collin.
Total Film Associate Editor Matt Maytum wrote: “#Oppenheimer blew me away: a character study on the grandest scale, with a sublime central performance by Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama but with a distinctive Nolan sensibility: the tension, the structure, the sense of scale, the striking sound design, the remarkable visuals. Wow.”
Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan also described Oppenheimer as possibly Nolan’s “most impressive film to date”.
