On Sunday, July 16, 2023, 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and 36-year-old Serbian Novak Djokovic competed on the Wimbledon tennis court. An exciting game in itself, but the visitors to the Royal Box on Center Court were almost even more exciting.
Hollywood stars and royals cavorted here. Like the Hidden-Object Puzzle you’re known to search for “Walter” as a kid, the Wimbledon final allowed you to search for Brad, Daniel and William, to name a few.
Anyone sitting near the Royal Box would certainly have trouble keeping their eyes on the yellow tennis ball, but if you took a closer look outside the box you could also find one or two A-celebrities.
Wimbledon winner did not believe in victory, many celebrities watched
The 20-year-old challenger said of his triumph at the Wimbledon lawn classic that the victory came as a bit of a surprise to himself: “I didn’t expect it to happen so quickly,” said Alcaraz. Previously, he had little hope of winning this tournament. In the run-up to Wimbledon, however, the Spaniard had already won the ATP tournament in Queens and thus set an example.
Nevertheless, he saw himself as an outsider before the final on Sunday. “Before this match, I didn’t think I was ready to beat Novak in five sets in a game like that,” said Alcaraz after his 1: 6, 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 1, 3: 6 , 6-4 in an epic final over 4:42 hours on Sunday in London.
“Being able to last five hours against such a legend is something special,” said Alcaraz. He also played the game in front of a bunch of international super celebrities, a king, an heir to the throne, princes and princesses and all the pomp you can imagine – and that with a whopping 20 years. With viewers like that, not everyone keeps their nerve.
