For the second part of the airy summer series “Flavour Yard Concerts”, the Schl8hofler have lured a veritable world star to Wels. As part of an extensive tour, guitarist Julian Lage and bassist Jorge Roeder gave a much-applauded concert in a sold-out hall. Many young people also visited the Schl8hof on Sunday evenings, thus debunking the widespread cliché of jazz as music for older, grey-bearded men.
The two impressed with their virtuoso playing and loosely flowing musicality. As a guitarist, Lage comes from the tradition of Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. The former was also one of his most important patrons. This style is characterized by clean lines, and Lage handled the most intricate rhythms and harmonies with an easy hand. Bassist Jorge Roeder is an ideal partner for this. He masters the walking bass as an accompanist as well as the imaginative soloing.
One piece began with an extended unaccompanied bass intro and continued as a lavishly grooving ballad. The two played almost exclusively their own, clever miniatures that are well suited as a basis for fine, intimate improvisations. Unfortunately, the very last piece of the concert fell victim to the power failure after a lightning strike. (haun)
