DiCaprio, not only would star, but will serve as producer of the feature film under the label Appian Way. Scott Rosenberg, responsible for the script, has sold his script to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer under a four-figure agreement.
Parallel to its sale to Amazon, MGM has premiered with great success at the box office Without Time to Die, and will soon do the same with the new Ridley Scott (The House of Gucci, set for this November 25) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza).
As for DiCaprio, shortly before the end of the year we will see him headlining the new film of Adam McKay, “Don’t Look Up”, distributed by Netflix. The Jim Jones biopic has no confirmed title or director yet.
What happened in “Jonestown”?
It was 1955 when Jim Jones founded the People’s Temple in Indianapolis, as the official congregation promoting Christian socialism. As this organization gained adherents, however, Jones rejected Christianity and began to affirm in front of the parishioners that he was God Himself.
In 1974, the People’s Temple agricultural project gave way to Jonestown, a commune founded in the northwest of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana (South America, near Venezuela), and attracted crowds of supporters touting a paradise free from US government control. In November 1978, the US sent a commission to investigate led by Leo Ryan, and a shooting took place in which Ryan and his men were killed, as well as four deserters from the Jones sect.
Jones then orchestrated a mass suicide of his followers by forcing them to drink Flavor Aid with cyanide, killing 918 cult members including 304 children.
