The 100 years of Disney come in a complicated context

Despite the festivities and the mega-show, some media outlets have described this celebration as “a bumpy birthday” and as “aggressively apolitical”, words used, for example, by the English newspaper The Guardian to recall that in February, Bob Iger, executive director of Walt Disney Company, announced 7,000 layoffs after a net loss of 2.4 million subscribers to the streaming platform Disney+.

Also, in May, Disney halted production of several shows due to writers’ strikes. And last Thursday, on the eve of the actors’ strike, Iger called the move “disturbing.” Later, the actress Fran Drescher, president of the Sag-Aftra actors union, exploded against the Disney executive and described her statements as “disgusting and deaf.”
