The actors are on strike for more money. The contributors to the Netflix prison series “Orange Is The New Black” report how badly series roles are sometimes paid for.
Diane Guerrero rose to fame with her role as Maritza Ramos in the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black. The series became a huge success, ran for seven seasons and won various awards. But Guerrero did not live a dazzling life as an actor during the shooting, as one might think – quite the contrary.
The 36-year-old told the “New Yorker” how badly she was paid for her role. While Netflix made millions from the series, she had to do another job besides acting to make ends meet: Guerrero worked as a waitress in a bar.
“Orange Is The New Black”: Actress was recognized by fans while waiting tables
There she was also recognized by fans, which was uncomfortable for her. “How could I tell these strangers how much I was getting for being on a show?” she asked. “Everyone would say, ‘Oh my God, I love you on this show. But what are you doing here?'” These experiences would have made her difficult. From 2013 to 2017, Guerrero was a permanent member of the successful series that ended in 2019.

$27 in royalties
And she apparently wasn’t the only actress who wasn’t financially adequately involved in the show’s box office earnings. The “New Yorker” spoke to a total of ten actors who reported similar things. Two years ago, Kimiko Glenn, who played Brook on seasons two through five of “Orange Is The New Black,” posted a document stating that she was only getting paid $27 in royalties for her appearances when Share for millions of streams.
In a recent Instagram video, Glenn also revealed that despite the show’s success, she and her co-workers have struggled financially. Some continued to work their second jobs while being internationally known and recognized on the street. The actors sometimes didn’t even have the money to take a taxi to the shoot.
Although the roles were paid at $ 900 per day of shooting, Glenn explained on Instagram, according to her, it was only shot twice in two weeks. According to Glenn, the net leftover was about $450 – which equated to $1800 with four days of shooting a month.
Actors strike for better pay
The members of the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA in the USA are currently on strike for better pay after negotiations with the association of TV and film studios AMPTP led to no result. The screenwriters had already stopped working. It is the first double strike in 60 years – there is no end in sight.
The strike is primarily intended to improve the situation of extras and actors in supporting roles, who often live close to the subsistence level. Among other things, the strikers blame the market dominance of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which only pay very small royalties.
