Not every woman is blessed with thick, long eyelashes, so that even the most expensive mascara can only provide more volume to a limited extent. However, if you want more fullness around your eyes, you can use a simple beauty trick: fake lashes.
Although the hype about fake lashes has only really grown again in recent years, they have been around since 1911: Anna Taylor from Canada had her first band eyelashes glued on that year. In the 90s, it was TV starlets and supermodels who made artificial eyelashes popular. Since then, the techniques for artificial eyelash extensions have been continuously developed and set new trends. But no matter which variant you choose, the fact is: Fake lashes are more popular than ever among women with thin or few eyelashes (whether prominent or not).
How do modern fake lashes differ?
There is now a large selection of fake lashes to stick on, which can differ from one another in size and length, density and fullness. In addition, there are not only artificial eyelashes, but also those made from real hair – which are accordingly more expensive. But in order:
Bandwimpern
So-called band eyelashes are the pioneers of all fake lashes: The artificial eyelashes are glued along your natural lash line and thus ensure significantly more fullness. Most models last up to twelve hours – and then end up in the trash, as they usually cannot be used a second time. On the other hand, opt for waterproof ones , these can be used several times in a row. How often always depends on proper cleaning and storage.
Tufts of eyelashes
In this variant, the fake lashes consist of several eyelashes in a tuft. They are attached using tweezers and some eyelash glue and provide more volume and density. the can be cut individually in length and score above all with the fact that they – carefully cleaned, cared for and stored – can be brought back into shape after wearing and can be used again. Here, too, you need a little practice to apply the fake lashes properly.
Individual eyelashes
This is , which are available in different lengths. This gives you the option of thickening your eyelashes individually – or just on the outer rim. Another benefit is that you can keep your natural look (if you want) without it appearing artificial. The only downer: attaching the individual eyelashes is time-consuming, especially on the first try.

That is why magnetic eyelashes are trendy
In addition to fake lashes, magnetic eyelashes are also conquering the beauty market. As the name suggests, the artificial eyelashes are not applied with an adhesive, instead there are two different variants:
- They are attached and held together above and below your own lash line with the help of wafer-thin magnets. It takes a bit of skill to attach, but it gets easier and easier with the routine. The lack of glue protects the eyes.
- Or you can use one in combination with artificial eyelashes: All you have to do is draw an eyeliner and dry it briefly so that the fake lashes stick to it. Here, too, reusability is one of the great advantages.
How to properly apply the false eyelashes
If you have never glued fake lashes on, the first time – in the truest sense of the word – can go wrong. To ensure that the artificial eyelashes sit straight, you will find helpful step-by-step instructions below:
Step 1:
Regardless of whether you want to use artificial, real or magnetic lashes, you should place them over your natural eyelashes before the first application. This will help you determine the correct length to cut your extensions to (for a natural look). Use a small pair of scissors for this. Ideally, however, the hairs do not have to be shortened at all.
Step 2:
Use the special eyelash adhesive for fake lashes by applying it thinly (slightly thicker towards the outside) along the lash band. If you want to use individual eyelashes or tufts of eyelashes, the adhesive should only be applied selectively.
Step 3:
Take the fake lashes in your hand and press them very carefully – and as close as possible to your lash line – from the outside (i.e. the corners of your eyes) inwards. As long as the glue is not yet dry, you can move the eyelashes a little with tweezers. Then close your eyes and let the glue dry for a few minutes.
Step 4:
Last but not least, you can shape the artificial eyelashes together with your real ones by covering them with some mascara. If you are satisfied with the result (even without applying make-up), you no longer need to use mascara.
How to remove the fake lashes again
If the glue is water-soluble, the artificial eyelashes can be easily removed with a damp cotton pad. Place this on your eyes for a few seconds until the fake lashes start to loosen – and you can carefully pull them off from the inside out. On the other hand, if the glue is waterproof, you will need to use an eye make-up remover. Magnetic eyelashes, on the other hand, are easiest to remove by rubbing them between your fingers and slowly detaching them from the lashes.
