The writers of The Simpson have commented on the plot similarities between the episode “Lisa vs. Stacy Malibu” (season 5, episode 14) and the Barbie of Greta Gerwig.
In the episode, which aired in February 1994, Lisa challenges the makers of Stacy Malibu (Springfield’s equivalent of Barbie) to create a less sexist doll, resulting in the development of Lisa Lionheart, a doll designed to positively influence girls.
As pointed out by the portal Vanity Fair in an interview with the writers of the episode Josh Weinstein and Bill Oakleyshares many topics with the Barbie live action. In the film, Barbie (Margot Robbie) becomes aware of the real world and wonders if she has been a positive influence on the young girls who have idolized her for decades..
Speaking to the outlet, Weinstein attributes any similarity to the cyclical nature of resurfacing issues in the culture. “It seems that it is the modern answer to the questions that were asked 30 years ago”says about the Barbie of 2023.
The film’s release this month also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the episode’s first cast rehearsal on July 15, 1993. “We had the table read for this episode exactly 30 years ago this week,” Weinstein added.
Speaking about the episode, Oakley said: “There are hundreds of episodes of The Simpsons that don’t stick in people’s minds, many of them excellent. But that seems. It particularly seems to resonate with women, I would say. When I meet a Simpsons fan, she’s often the one they cite as their favorite.”
