Tony Bennett, historic American singer, has died

Died Tony Bennettthe legendary singer whose storied career enjoyed a resurgence that lasted until his final days, was 96 years old at the time of his death.

Tony battled Alzheimer’s diseasebut even after that diagnosis, he continued to perform, including a memorable series of final concerts in New York, where he was joined by Lady Gaga.

Tony Bennett’s extensive career

Bennett was perhaps best known for his signature 1962 song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” as well as staging a stunning career comeback during the ’80s and ’90s that gave him sustained popularity well into old age. He won 19 Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement award in 2001, and has sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

In 2020, it was announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016. He wrote on Twitter: “Life is a gift, even with Alzheimer’s.” It was revealed that although her cognitive function was impaired, she was still able to sing a wide range of her repertoire.

In 2022, Bennett performed his last shows, alongside Lady Gagawith whom he shared his 20th Grammy Award, at the age of 95.

Paul McCartney, John Legend, Christina Aguilera and Michael Bubléas well as Frank Sinatraare on the long list of others, and his 2011 duet with Amy Winehouse“Body And Soul”, was the last song he recorded before his death.

Singing was not Bennett’s only artistic endeavor. His paintings, produced under his birth name (Anthony Dominick Benedetto), are on display at the Smithsonian Institution and the Butler Institute of American Art. In 2001, she founded the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, New York, which offers degrees in fine arts, dance, vocal and instrumental music, theater, and film.
