Every July 21 in different countries celebrates the world dog day. This global anniversary was created in 2004, motivated by the immeasurable importance of these animals in the day to day of human beings and the need to put an end to animal abuse.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 70% of dogs in the world are homeless. Currently there are approximately 300 million dogs in the world.
To celebrate dogs, here are five movies from assorted genres available on Netflix that have them as protagonist.
the reason to be with you
A dog tries to discover its purpose in life as it goes through different owners. Through various reincarnations such as Toby, Bailey and Buddy, the same dog will have the opportunity to live three different lives and thus discover the purpose of his existence alongside humans. Directed by Lasse Hallström, it stars Britt Robertson, Dennis Quaid, KJ Apa, Josh Gad, Peggy Lipton and Juliet Rylance.

Two brothers named Carter and Frankie find a stray dog and bring it home, but their workaholic mom won’t let her kids have pets. The children are kidnapped by criminals and the only one who can rescue them is the dog. Directed by Brandon Camp, it is a reboot of the 1974 film of the same name, which was directed by Camp’s father, Joe. It stars Gabriel Bateman and Darby Camp.
Lost dog

Based on the true story, a father and son mend their broken relationship during a forced hike up the Appalachian Trail to find their beloved lost dog. This film is directly based on the book Dog Gone: A Lost Pet’s Extraordinary Journey and the Family Who Brought Him Home written by the brother-in-law of the protagonist of this story, Pauls Toutonghi, which, in turn, was based on a true story located in 1998, the year Fielding Marshall lost his dog. It stars Rob Lowe and Johnny Berchtold. The direction was in charge of Stephen Herek.
White Fang

The film tells the story of White Fang, a brave wolfhound. He is initially trained by Gray Beaver and his Indian tribe, who is forced to hand him over to an evil man. Saved by a friendly couple, the dog must put aside his wild instincts and get used to living surrounded by humans. Directed by Alexandre Espigares, it is based on the novel of the same name by American author Jack London. It features the voices of Nick Offerman, Rashida Jones, Paul Giamatti and Eddie Spears.

Newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan decide to leave the harsh Michigan winters behind to settle in sunny West Palm Beach, Florida. The two get jobs at two rival newspapers, buy their first home, and face the challenges of marriage. When John confesses to his friend and colleague Sebastian that he doesn’t feel ready to be a father yet, he suggests that he give Jenny a dog. The Grogans adopt a cute Labrador puppy who shortly after turns into a 100-pound hulk that turns the house into a real catastrophe. Directed and written by David Frankel, it stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston.
