Californian Greta Gerwig raked in $155 million at the box office in North America over the weekend (starting July 21) with the film “Barbie” – more than any woman before it on a opening weekend in the United States and Canada.
As of yesterday, production has grossed $337 million worldwide. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” falls short of expectations at number two ($80.5 million in North America, $174 million globally).
Austria’s largest cinema chain, Cineplexx, recorded more than 260,000 visitors over the weekend for both films, which started on July 20 (Thursday). The double phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer” also affects smaller institutions. By Sunday, 1,300 cinema fans had seen “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in Linz’s City and Moviemento cinemas. Pink dominated: 900 were in “Barbie”, 400 in the political thriller about the atomic bomb.
