The song “Komet” has been dominating the German charts for weeks. Whether it will become the “summer hit 2023” is still in the stars.
The market research company GfK Entertainment has been determining the official “summer hit of the year” since 2014. This year, however, the company’s investigations seem to be more difficult than in previous years. In view of the fact that the song “Komet” by Udo Lindenberg and Apache 207 is currently breaking all chart records, it is considered a hot contender for the title – whether it spreads the necessary summer mood is another matter.
Will the summer hit only be chosen in August?
The chart investigators from Baden-Baden are assuming that the official summer hit will not be finally announced until August this year. There it says: “The official summer hit for this year has not yet been determined. Possible candidates would be – in addition to ‘Komet’ – ‘Friesenjung’ (Ski Aggu, Joost & Otto Waalkes), ‘Girl on the Horse’ (Luca-Dante Spadafora, Niklas Dee & Octavian) or ‘sommer’ (Casper feat. CRO).”
Whether “Komet” can really meet the strict criteria for the “summer hit” is questionable. After all, the election is not just about the high number of hits on music streaming portals and social networks. the classic winner has “a catchy melody, is suitable for dancing, spreads a holiday mood, was number one in the charts if possible, was not known through any major event, is played up and down in clubs and comes from an artist who has not been able to celebrate any major chart successes in previous years.”
Much of this does not apply to the song “Komet”. While it undeniably has a catchy tune, it’s not, by any stretch of the imagination, great for dancing or adding holiday cheer to parties. The text of the mega-hit, which is about leaving comet-like tracks before one dies, is much too melancholic for that. On the other hand, the exuberantly silly remix spectacle “Friesenjung” by the TikTok stars Ski Aggu and Joost (25) in cooperation with Otto Waalkes (75) should have significantly greater chances of spreading party mood and summer mood.
Does a Ballermann song make the race again?
However, it would be possible that, like last year with the scandalous song “Layla”, another Ballermann hit would push itself to the top of the summer hit charts in the last few meters. Candidates for this would be relevant shout-along anthems such as “Bumsbar” (“Today we’re fuckable again; Horny girls, horny guys there”) by Ikke Hipgold (46), Schürze and DJ Robin (27) or “Peter Pan” (“I’m blue like the ocean again; And I think I can fly like Peter Pan”) by Julian Sommer (25) and Mia Julia (36) released at the beginning of the year.
