Aviation: Passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport is picking up

The number of passengers at Frankfurt Airport continues to rise. In June the million mark was exceeded again.

Passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport increased noticeably at the beginning of the main travel season in June after difficult months.

With almost 1.8 million passengers, the number of passengers exceeded the million mark for the second time this year after May, as the airport operator Fraport announced. That was almost three times as many as a year earlier and more than the 1.25 million passengers in May, but 73 percent less than before the corona pandemic in June 2019. The volume of freight and airmail, on the other hand, increased compared to June 2020 31.5 percent to 186,622 tons.

For the current year, Fraport boss Stefan Schulte recently predicted “less than 20 to 25 million” passengers for Frankfurt. In his estimation, demand will pick up “sometime in the summer”. In 2020, the number of passengers dropped to less than 19 million, after the airport had a record year of more than 70 million in 2019. Schulte does not expect this level again until 2025 or 2026.
