Known for his rock music that looks to the origins, Petty – who died in 2017 at the age of 66 from an accidental drug overdose – triumphed with his band The Heartbreakers, as part of the supergroup The Travelling Wilburys and as a soloist.

“Wildflowers” It was his second solo album and in the film he describes being himself and not holding back on songwriting.

“There is so much more to know about him at that time than we could have imagined thinking about the film,” he told Reuters Adria Petty, daughter of the singer and executive producer of the film.

“It’s a very personal album (…) I see a lot of his autobiographical arc in it (…) you actually have everything from ‘I’m breaking up with my childhood sweetheart’ to ‘I’m finding someone else to love from whom I’m really falling in love, ‘”he added.

In addition to the archival footage, the documentary features interviews with the producer Rick Rubin and members of The Heartbreakersincluding guitarist Mike Campbell. Most of the band members worked with Petty on the album.

“For me it was another record. I didn’t have all five Heartbreakers at once, but a lot of them hit the record here and there,” Campbell told Reuters.

“For me it was just, what’s today’s song you know? Okay, that’s a good song, let’s record it with whoever is here and make it as great as we can (…) It was Tom’s vision (…) but it felt like another project that Tom and I would have done together, “he said.
