Running is healthy. But if we Germans wear running shoes, we are crazy. Whistle for preparation and rest breaks. Torment us with a bright red head. Breathing from the stitching in the side. We just don’t want to stop. Especially now when the sun is shining, when the many good resolutions drive us to the door. We believe: running, pah, everyone can do that.

And me anyway! We run more doggedly than any other nation in Europe. German joggers cover an average of 6.4 kilometers per running unit, making them the front runners. We don’t give up even when it hurts.

Wrong ambition makes you sick.

According to a study by the AOK, two thirds of all German recreational runners train in such a way that they endanger or even harm their health. 60 percent are traveling too fast. This is how popular sport becomes a widespread disease.

Up to 80 percent injure themselves at least once a year

The doctor’s offices are full of patients who want to do their bodies good and can only hobble. Men usually do too much, women exercise too irregularly. Up to 80 percent of the 17 million runners in Germany are injured at least once a year. But not because they broke bones, such injuries are rare among runners. But because they train wrong, wear the wrong shoes and act wrong. Heel spurs, inflammation of the Achilles tendon or on the edge of the shinbone and knee pain are typical runner complaints.

Professor Thomas Wessinghage, formerly European champion over 5000 meters and an experienced orthopedist and running trainer, knows these cases. “If people were to be satisfied with less or less progress, we would not have these problems.” Therefore, his appeal: “People, run, but do it right!”

This is exactly what the new episode of the podcast “She runs. He’s running. ”We talk about why so many runners get injured. The best way to prevent pain and discomfort – and what to do if it pinches and pulls. Have a listen!
