Joachim Löw: DFB says goodbye to the “coach of the century”

Before the World Cup qualifier in Wolfsburg, Joachim Löw was bid farewell to numerous ex-national players as the “coach of the century”.

Ex-national coach Joachim Löw (61) officially bid farewell to the German national team’s World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein. Numerous former players met in Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg to pay their respects to their 2014 world champion coach.

Lukas Podolski (36), Per Mertesacker (37), Sami Khedira (34), Mario Gomez (36), Miroslav Klose (43) and Benedikt Höwedes (33) gave Löw applause on site. However, ex-captain Philipp Lahm (38) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (37) were not present. Löw received a framed certificate from Peter Peters (59), the temporary DFB President. On it he was described as the “coach of the century” and thanked him with the words: “Historically. Human. World-class. Thank you for everything, Jogi.”

. In it he writes: “Dear players, dear team behind the team, dear DFB, dear fans, thank you very much for allowing me to be part of our national team for 17 years. It was a fantastic time for which I am infinitely grateful.” There is “nothing bigger and more beautiful than being allowed to represent your country in sport.” He wishes his successor Hansi Flick (56) and the fans “all the best and many exciting and successful tournaments with our national team. You deserve it. I will remain your fan.”

Joachim “Jogi” Löw was assistant coach of the national team under Jürgen Klinsmann (57) from 2004, before he took over the job of national coach in 2006. He held this office for 15 years before announcing in March 2021 that he would be stepping down after the European Championships in the same year. Flick took over for him. In Wolfsburg and under the eyes of his predecessor, he was able to look forward to a 9-0 shooting party for his team against overwhelmed and decimated Liechtensteiners.
