For the first impression there is no second chance. Especially when dating, it is important that the first meeting is successful, otherwise there will not be a second one at all. Researchers are now investigating how to make the first impression as good as possible.
A team of researchers from the USA has analyzed which characteristics are considered particularly important on a first date. The results, published in the journal “Sexuality & Culture”, show that the values differ between men and women. Men score well on a first date with good manners, humor and generosity when paying. Whereas women can impress with a little polite reserve, interesting questions and also a humorous manner.
The research team achieved these results by asking 100 people at a university and on Facebook which characteristics of the other person can make the first date perfect. A second study asked 131 people to rate the responses from the first study on a scale from one to seven. In addition, the terms mentioned should be assigned to the categories “etiquette”, “sympathy” and “behaviour”.
Women and men value different behaviors when dating
The result of the two studies said that men are particularly important in women characteristics that fall under the category “sympathy”. Whereby women are more likely to look for a gentleman and “etiquette” is the most important quality of a man on a first date.
The four researchers James B. Moran, Courtney L. Crosby, Taylor Himes and T. Joel Wade then watched the Netflix dating show “Dating Around” to confirm their results. In this show, one person has to go on five different first dates per episode and in the end decides which of the five new acquaintances gets a second date. But analyzing the TV show didn’t exactly reflect the original research. The researchers suspected that it is because a TV show is not real life, participants behave differently and the recordings were also edited and cut afterwards.
However, researcher James Moran concedes that the results of their study are purely hypothetical because they came from surveys and not real-world date observations.
