Rapper Lil Tay: 14-year-old thought dead is still alive

Rapper Lil Tay: 14-year-old thought dead is still alive

Confusion about the 14-year-old rapper Lil Tay: Her death was first reported on Instagram. Then she herself clarified that she was still alive.

It was a shock for fans of the rapper and influencer Lil Tay: On Wednesday, a post appeared on the 14-year-old’s Instagram profile, after which she and her brother had died. “We lack the words to express the unbearable loss and indescribable pain,” it said. No further information was given about the cause of death.

A good 24 hours later, however, the turnaround: Lil Tay is alive. She had turned to the US celebrity portal “TMZ” to correct the false report. “I want to make it clear that my brother and I are safe and alive,” she said. The previous 24 hours had been “very traumatizing”: “All of yesterday I was bombarded with endless, heartbreaking and tearful calls from loved ones as I tried to come to terms with this chaos.”

Lil Tay’s account allegedly hacked

But how did this bizarre confusion come about? Lil Tay explained: “My Instagram account was hacked and used by a third party to spread shocking misinformation and rumors about me.” As an indication, she cited the fact that her former name, Claire, was used in the post. The rapper herself had not posted a post on her account (3.5 million followers) for five years.

After the death was announced, rumors spread that Lil Tay and her brother had died in a car accident. At the same time, however, many fans expressed the suspicion early on that the alleged obituary was a PR stunt – albeit a very tasteless one.

Lil Tay was born Claire Hope but dropped that name and now goes by the name of Tay Tian. She became known at the age of nine on Instagram and with rap videos on YouTube, she called herself the “youngest poser of the century”. She liked to brag about luxury cars and banknotes on social media, but has hardly been in public in recent years.
