Jason Momoa has addressed his followers with an appeal: Anyone who would have planned a vacation on Maui should not come.
The US actor and native Hawaiian Jason Momoa (44) sets up in view of the deadly forest fires on the island of Maui: Nobody should enter the island for tourist purposes. “Maui is not the right place for a vacation right now,” writes the “Aquaman” star about a slide show and videos of the devastating natural disaster that took many lives. The slideshow was captioned with the words “Do not travel to Maui”.
Momoa doesn’t let excuses count either: “Don’t tell yourself that your presence on an island that is suffering so much is necessary.” The actor thanks everyone who has donated. Official bodies also keep calling on tourists to continue to avoid the island of Maui. Although the first residents are now returning to their homes, the extinguishing work is still ongoing. Also, no conclusive assessment of the destruction could be made.
“Our community needs time to heal, mourn and rebuild,” Momoa continued in the post. “This means the fewer visitors there are on the island, the better, because resources are extremely limited.” In order to support the residents of the disaster island in their plight, Momoa, who was born in Hawaii in 1979, called for donations in a dramatic appeal on Instagram.
Jason Momoa: ‘We are shocked and heartbroken by our friends’
There he wrote: “We are shocked and heartbroken by our friends and ‘ohana [“erweiterte Familie”] on Maui affected by recent wildfires. Link in our bio to organizations that help.” One of the linked donation recipients is the local aid organization Āina Momona, which works for a healthy environment and social justice on the island chain in the Pacific Ocean.
According to the authorities, the fires have so far claimed at least 89 lives. Hawaii’s governor Josh Green warned all people returning from the evacuation with impressive words, according to the US media on the TV channel KHON2: “You will see a level of destruction like never before in your life.”
