Algeria withdrew the film from theaters Barbie for “moral outrage”, after a diffusion of more than two weeks, indicated several local media.
According to the online information site 24H Algeria, citing “informed sources”, the film was removed from the programming of all theaters in the country for “moral outrage”.
On Sunday, theater owners changed the programs and removed the film from Greta Gerwigwithout giving reasons.
The distributor also announced that the film, which was released in theaters on July 19 in Algeria, is being removed from the schedule.
“The controversy over Barbie came to Algeria for scenes intended for adult audiences” and allusions to homosexuality, the TSA information site noted.
Barbie was banned in Kuwait and Lebanon
Kuwait last Thursday banned the film “outrage against public morality” and on Wednesday the Lebanese Ministry of Culture said it had asked for its ban, as “promotes homosexuality”.
Turned into a worldwide phenomenon, the subject of an intense marketing campaign, the film has imposed the color pink in clothing, various accessories and other objects.
The departure of “Barbie” caused the increase in sales of the dolls of the American group Mattel. The film continues to break records nearly a month after it first appeared on the big screen.
Greta Gerwig’s comedy has grossed $1.18 billion at the worldwide box office and now ranks as the second-highest-grossing opening in Warner Bros. history.
