Merkel speaks out clearly against compulsory vaccination as in France

In Germany there are growing concerns that not enough people are getting vaccinated. Nevertheless, Chancellor Merkel speaks out clearly against compulsory vaccination – but passionately promotes the spades.

Could there be compulsory vaccination in Germany, as France is targeting for certain professions? According to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), something like this is not planned in this country. “We do not intend to take the path proposed by France. We have said there will be no compulsory vaccination,” said Merkel on Tuesday after a conversation with Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) and the President of the Robert Koch Institute , Lothar Wieler, in Berlin.

The Chancellor said that she did not believe that changing this statement would gain confidence. You can win that by promoting vaccination. In Germany, too, there are currently concerns about a possible decline in willingness to vaccinate in the population.

Angela Merkel: More freedom through more vaccinations

Vaccination may seem superfluous or threatening to some. “And that’s why I tell everyone who is still unsure whether they should be vaccinated: A vaccination not only protects you, but also someone you are close to, who is important to you, who you love,” emphasized Merkel. A vaccination not only protects against serious illness, but also from the stressful restrictions of everyday life. “The more we are vaccinated, the freer we will be again, the freer we can live again.”

Merkel and Spahn had previously exchanged ideas with Wieler during a visit to the RKI. Among other things, it was about the influence of vaccinations on the course of the pandemic against the background of increasing numbers of infections due to the delta variant of the coronavirus.

According to experts, vaccination rates of 85 percent among those aged twelve to 59 should be achieved in Germany, said Merkel after the professional exchange with the responsible federal authorities. For over-60s, the rate must be 90 percent in order to avoid another sharp increase in the number of cases given the spread of the delta variant, she added. But Germany is “still a long way off” from that.

Compulsory vaccination for healthcare workers in France

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday evening that health workers would be required to be vaccinated. Employees in hospitals and nursing homes now have until mid-September to get vaccinated. According to Health Minister Olivier Véran, unvaccinated people are no longer allowed to work and are no longer paid.

According to Health Minister Spahn, the federal government is not ruling out the fact that the previously free corona tests in Germany will not be subject to long-term costs for unvaccinated people. One is still in a phase of conviction, in a later phase one could certainly think about it, said Spahn after the talks with Merkel and Wieler. “I don’t see it for Germany yet, but I don’t want to rule out the possibility of getting into this situation.”
