The term “Nepo Babies” has been making the rounds on social media for several years. By definition, these are people who – based on the concept of nepotism – benefit from the fact that their parents are successful in the modeling, music or acting business. The term “Nepo” is derived from “nepotism”, the acquisition of benefits by and for family members or other relatives.
More and more celebrities are turning out to be “Nepo Babies”
There are many examples of “Nepo Babies”: Heidi Klum’s daughter Leni Klum, Dakota Johnson, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, or Lily Collins, daughter of singer Phil Collins, have long been known as “Nepo Babies” and can tell their parents be assigned directly. But the list of “Nepo Babies” is long and sometimes opaque. Even supposedly independently successful artists turn out to be – surprising for some people – the children of successful parents who could have given their career a potential boost. Not everyone likes that. There is now a lively discussion on the Internet as to whether the success of some “Nepo Babies” is really due to their performance and not just to the background of their parents – and whether they could have asserted themselves in the industry without them.
Users disagree about the fairness of nepotism. On the one hand, there is a discussion about the extent to which the “Nepo Babies” themselves decided about their careers – children of famous or successful parents often grow up involuntarily in the limelight. On the other hand, however, a distinction is made between “good” and “bad” “Nepo Babies”. Actress Emma Roberts, daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, is rightly successful as an actress, but opinions are divided when it comes to young stars like Leni Klum or Lily-Rose Depp. But whether “justified” or not – with some “Nepo Babies” the astonishment is great when the family connections become known.
