Unlike Prince William, Queen Letizia made the journey to Australia to cheer on Spain’s national team in the World Cup final.
The English national football team has to play the World Cup final in Sydney without royal support: the English heir to the throne, Prince William, is not attending the Lionesses’ game. Spain’s Queen Letizia, on the other hand, made the long journey to Australia to cheer on her team.
That’s why Prince William is skipping the World Cup final
Princess Kate’s husband is staying away from the major sporting event because he wants to avoid a long-haul flight. According to the BBC, William, who is strongly committed to the fight against climate change, would like to avoid such a long journey for an ultimately short stay “Down Under”. Instead, he will watch the first World Cup final of the English women’s national team in his home Kensington Palace on TV.
Queen Letizia of Spain is present at the World Cup final. Letizia is considered a great supporter of the team. Before the tournament started, she visited the players in their training center. However, her older daughter, the heir to the throne Princess Leonor of Spain, will not be making the long journey to Australia. The 17-year-old began her training at the Spanish military academy this week. Also King Felipe VI. stays away from the match due to other commitments.
“What a phenomenal performance”
After England’s 3-1 victory in the semi-finals against hosts Australia, Prince William had expressed his enthusiasm on X (formerly Twitter). “What a phenomenal performance by the Lionesses – let’s go to the final,” William tweeted after the team’s convincing victory.

Both teams are in a World Cup final for the first time. For England it would only be the second World Cup triumph ever – after the 4-2 victory against the German national team in 1966. At that final in Wembley, Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) was present and presented captain Bobby Moore (1941 -1993) the World Cup.
