Delfina Cheb: “Whatever you are singing, let it always be from the heart”

Journalist: How does tango come to your life?

Delfina Cheb: Tango was always part of me and of the sounds of my house. In my family, one listened a lot to Goyeneche, Rubén Juárez … that world was always there. My grandfather was a singer. He was not professional but he put his soul into each of his performances. His voice always resonates in me, he sings in the ear of my heart as Ferrer wrote.

Q .: What does it mean for you, living and studying in the United States, to have released an album composed of music so representative of Argentina from there? Did you experience it in a special way?

D.C.: I lived it and I live it as an infinite refuge of love and roots. Every time I sing those songs, I find a new way of feeling them, of listening to them, of living them. It is a letter of thanks to my teachers of music and life.

Q .: How was (and is) the experience of working with Javier Limón?

D.C.: Javier is a great friend, a teacher and a magician. Every time we do something together I learn hundreds of things not only about music but about life. Javier has a talent and a gift for finding where people shine and he goes out of his way to help them explore their own sayings. I am deeply grateful to him and his beautiful family for their drive and their immense art, it is always an honor to share moments with them.

Q .: Do you see tango as a way forward? Or a place you already know you can return to? Would you like to gradually dabble in other genres and styles?

D.C.: I see it as a way of saying, writing, looking, rehearsing, meeting wonderful people, returning to Buenos Aires and always being close to its people, its streets, its aroma and its colors. I would like to do a lot of things! I love the world of improvisation with all its twists and turns and I think of the song as a way to find ways to sing and make music, I think the word connects many of those paths. The saying. Having one or more stories to tell. Whatever you are singing, let it always be from the heart.

Q .: Are there ideas or plans for new material, or is it time to take advantage and play as much as possible live?

D.C.: Yes! There are always ideas. There are ideas of embarking on a project that plays with other music such as jazz and pop with root notes of course. There are also plans for more tangos. To record tangos that my teachers have taught me and to continue venturing into this passionate exercise of saying. And of saying singing.

Q .: Regarding the show at the Tasso, in which you will be accompanied by great guests, what will the public find?

D.C.: The Tasso show is going to be a party! I have the honor to be accompanied by the fundamental trio made up of Horacio Avilano, Hernán Fredes and Hernán Mastromarini and to have the presence of Lidia Borda and Luis Salinas as guests. As I said before, I am lucky to have met great teachers who helped me enter this beautiful world of tango and having them for this first presentation is very exciting and moving for me. We are going to be playing songs from the album written by Javier Limón and by me, as well as some beautiful tangos that we are also preparing for what is to come. Buenos Aires, I’m already stepping on the tiles, blooming in the roses to return. See you there!
