A 66-year-old shopkeeper was murdered in California over a rainbow flag outside her store. She was a friend of Hollywood director Paul Feig.
Director Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids”, “Ghostbusters”) mourns the loss of a friend. “Our wonderful friend Lauri Carleton was murdered yesterday,” wrote the 60-year-old on Instagram for a photo that shows him with Carleton.
“We are all devastated,” said Feig. Carleton was shot in front of her boutique in a small town in California (about 100 kilometers from Los Angeles). According to the results of the police investigation so far, the background to the crime was a dispute over a rainbow flag, with which Carleton wanted to express her support for the LGBTQ+ community. A 27-year-old man apparently disliked this and tore down the flag. There was a verbal argument with Carleton, the perpetrator took up the gun and shot her.
Perpetrator dies in police operation
The man is said to have previously made “numerous derogatory remarks about the rainbow flag,” police said, according to the US news agency AP. Carleton was pronounced dead at the scene. The shopkeeper was 66 years old. The perpetrator fled, but was caught by the police a little later. The 27-year-old died in the process. The exact course of the confrontation between the perpetrator and the police is still unclear, reports AP.
Paul Feig found clear words for the murder of Lauri Caleton. “This intolerance needs to end. Anyone using hateful words against the LGBTQ+ community needs to realize that words matter and that words can lead to violence against innocent, loving people,” wrote the director most recently filmed the Netflix fantasy film “The School for Good and Evil”, on Instagram.

Daughters speak of “hate crimes”
Air and Kelsey Carleton, the daughters of the deceased, also commented on the fact. It was undoubtedly a “hate crime”. “We will continue to champion love, equality and acceptance in everything we do. Love will always triumph over hate,” they said on Instagram.
