Victory at the ESC and biggest hit “L’italiano”
The news of the death was announced by Cutugnos manager Danilo Mancuso. “After a long illness, the singer has been worse in recent months,” he explained. A precise cause of death was not given. Cutugno first celebrated success as a songwriter since the 1970s. For example, Adriano Celentano (85) achieved a number one hit in 1979 with the song “Soli”, which he co-wrote. In 1980, Cutugno himself won the renowned Sanremo Festival with “Solo noi”. He took part in this a total of 15 times in his long career, but without triumphing again.
His 1983 hit “L’italiano” is arguably Cutugno’s best-known work. Although the shallow pop number does not omit any Italian cliché, many people still associate the song with the certain attitude towards life south of the Alps. At the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 1990 in Zagreb, the singer then triumphed with “Insieme 1992”. In his long career he is said to have sold 100 million albums. In recent years things had become quieter around him, and Cutugno withdrew almost entirely from the public eye.
