“She’s everything. He’s just Ken.” – True to that of the blockbuster Barbie himself highly coveted, while the demand for Ken plays a minor role. More than 16,000 ads are currently on I want to have listed in the “Barbie” category, from the classic specimen to the rarity for collectors.
Pink as far as the eye can see – months before the film started it was “Barbie” on everyone’s lips. When the time finally came in Austria in mid-July, the blockbuster exceeded all expectations Barbie-Look dressed film fans let the domestic box office ring and nostalgia arise. Willhaben has taken this as an opportunity to see how the demand for Barbie-Puppen about a month after the film started, at what price the advertisements are offered on average and which special pieces and collections can currently be found on Austria’s largest digital marketplace.
Demand for Barbie dolls is booming
Barbie-Dolls – but also the houses, vehicles, furniture, clothes and other accessories that go with them – are among the most wanted toys on willhaben all year round, but especially around Christmas. However, Greta Gerwig’s film of the same name made sure that Barbie-dolls are also in great demand outside of the annual gift giving and the number of keyword searches for this very term on willhaben has been 75 percent higher on average since the film was released in Austria than before. While the demand for “Ken” accounts for only a fraction of searches, it has also grown noticeably around the film’s release.
The increased demand affects around 16,000 ads currently in the category “barbies / Ken Dolls”.
Want Barbieland
Currently one Barbie in new or like-new condition on the willhaben marketplace for an average of around 36 euros. The actual price range is between one and more than a thousand euros, not least because of the enormous collector’s value of many specimens. From January to July 2023 went in the category “barbies / Ken Puppen” about ten percent more ads online than in the same period of the previous year.
