Florence Kasumba (46) can look forward to a new challenge: the actress takes on a role in the musical “Mamma Mia!”. A year after the premiere in Hamburg’s Stage Theater Neue Flora, she will complete the cast in the role of “Tanja” alongside Mathias Edenborn (48, “Bill”) and John Vooijs (44, “Sam”). From September 8th they will be on stage for the first time.
Old environment, new role
“I’m really looking forward to my time on ‘Mamma Mia!’ It’s the first time in over ten years that I’ve had time for a longer-term stage engagement,” Florence Kasumba comments on her new engagement. 21 years ago she was already part of the premiere cast and took over the role of “Lisa”. She will be on stage in her new role until January 2024.
After completing her education at the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg, Netherlands, Kasumba took on a wide variety of roles in well-known musicals in Germany and Austria, including “Chicago”, “Evita”, “Cats” and “West Side Story”. From 2003 to 2004 she played the title role in Elton John’s “Aida” at the Colosseum Theater in Essen and also inspired audiences as Shenzi in Disney’s “The Lion King”.
Kasumba initially took on a few guest roles on German television before she played her first leading role in a “crime scene” in 2011. She has been a permanent member of the Göttingen “Tatort” team since 2019. Kasumba has also attracted international attention. In the film “The First Avenger: Civil War” she appeared for the first time as the powerful warrior Ayo, the role was further expanded for the film “Black Panther”. Kasumba also starred in the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
