Matthew McConaughey’s wife Camila Alves (41) can sing a song about it: openly spoken about the complicated relationship with mother-in-law Kay McCabe (91). And the 41-year-old reveals how she finally gained respect.
“She wanted me to fight back”
“She was doing all those things when I came on the scene,” said Alves. “She called me by all his ex-girlfriends’ names. She started speaking broken Spanish to me to put me down. She was really testing me.”
Alves, who has been married to Matthew McConaughey since 2012 and has three children with him, also remembers the moment that finally brought about the turning point: When she had to travel to Istanbul for a modeling job, she got a first-class ticket and a free hotel room for a companion – and invited her mother-in-law to come along.
On this trip, she realized that she had to say something to McGabe and not put up with everything: “So I showed my spicy Brazilian Latino side and gave it back to her. It then went back and forth.”
In the end, according to Camila Alves, she fought for her mother-in-law’s respect: “She looked at me as if to say, ‘Now you belong’. All she wanted was for me to fight back.” Their relationship has been great since that day: “I have so much respect for them.”
