Haakon and Mette-Marit: Norwegian crown prince couple celebrates wedding anniversary

The Norwegian crown prince couple Haakon and Mette-Marit have several reasons to celebrate this summer: both recently turned 50 and their wedding anniversary is now approaching. On this occasion, the royals invite you to a “backyard party”.

Congratulations! The Norwegian crown prince couple is celebrating their wedding anniversary and a double birthday. This Friday they invited to a “backyard party”. That’s what they call the folk festival they’re throwing in the courtyard of the Royal Castle in Oslo, which is about the size of the soccer field in the nearby Ullevaal Stadium. Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit celebrate their 22nd wedding anniversary; not a great anniversary in itself, but the two just turned 50, he on July 20th, she on August 19th – and Haakon and Mette-Marit just want to say “takk”, thank you.

Haakon and Mette-Marit got married on August 25, 2001

Now, both of them are not people who like to make big royal fuss about themselves, so they prefer “backyard party” instead of “castle festival”. Norwegians are invited from all corners of the country and from various walks of life, who can come with a good feeling: 81 percent of their compatriots currently support the monarchy and therefore also a future royal couple Haakon and Mette-Marit. It was not easy for them: the relationship between the two triggered a moderate government crisis, and finally the crown prince married a popular woman on August 25, 2001: Mette-Marit was a middle-class, single mother, a party girl with no professional training. Haakon spoke at the wedding banquet: “I have never been so weak and never so strong. Mette-Marit, I love you.”

There has probably never been a more beautiful sentence publicly in the European high nobility: the love of the two brought them a lot of sympathy – and carried them through dark times. For example, when Mette-Marit’s stepbrother died in the terrorist attacks in Oslo and Utøya in 2011. Or when she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018; Due to the chronic illness, she needs time off again and again. On Friday, however, the two will celebrate: the Norwegians – and maybe a little bit themselves.
