A restored version of the animated classic “Cinderella” arrives at Disney +

The restored version of “Cinderella”animated classic from Mickey Mouse’s house released in 1950, joins the streaming platform’s catalog Disney+ as part of the activities and tributes that the company has been carrying out since the end of last year on the way to next October, the 100th anniversary of its birth.

Fantasy and musical, the film number 12 on the list of titles of walt disney animation was created based on the fairy tale that the French author Charles Perrault published in 1697, and became a rescue for the still young company, then squeezed by debts and which had come from various box office failures with films such as “Pinocchio” (1940) and “Bambi” (1942), whose call to theaters was overshadowed by the emergencies and the prevailing social climate during the Second World War.

What is Cinderella about?

The Disney adaptation tells the story of a young orphan girl who is forced by her stepmother and stepsisters to live in servitude in her own home, and who, desperate to enjoy some freedom, is helped by the Fairy Godmother, who makes her a beautiful dress with matching crystal slippers so that the protagonist can attend the gala ball that the King decides to organize to find a suitor for his son, Prince Charming.

However, at the stroke of midnight and after the romance is born between her and the heir to the kingdom, Cinderella tries to flee as quickly as possible before the spell vanishes, although in the escape she leaves behind one of the shoes. which, later, would lead her to reunite with her lover to leave behind the mistreatment of her home and live happily ever after.

The very traditional children’s story passed through the magical filter of walt disney quickly became a success for critics and audiences, positioning itself as his most successful production since “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” (1937) -the first animated feature film from the studios- and taking the first step in the construction of an entire franchise of princesses that, with its updates and a look that seeks to dialogue with the current public, continues to this day.

Restoration of Cinderella

Now, the film can be seen restored and in 4K quality in streaming after being released at the beginning of the year at the Berlin International Film Festival, where 52 years ago it debuted and won a Golden Bear, product of the work of the Restoration team. and Disney Preservation to bring back the artistic ambitions and sound of the original film.

In that sense, Kevin Schaefferdirector of the Restoration area, assured in statements to the press that together with both external and internal technical experts and advisers, “this classic looks and sounds better than ever”, and gave details of the extensive process that the project took.

“We began by extracting the original nitrate negative from the US Library of Congress (where a copy has been preserved since 2018 for its “cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance”) and scanning the exposure color records in 4K. Next we did a cleaning to remove dirt and as many unwanted sound effects as possible, and the tools we currently have allowed us to produce a sharper, higher-quality picture than previous remasters,” added Schaeffer.

For his part, Eric Goldberga veteran in the field of Disney animation, said that “viewers who enjoy this restoration will see more clarity, but also more subtlety and differences in color from one shot to another”, and “discover how a color works with other”.

“We had a hard time seeing Cinderella again with ash blonde hair and a silver dress. I’m proud that the studio felt it was important to get this restoration right and trusted us to get the job done,” he concluded.
