The Colombian singer is the first South American star to receive this distinction.
Shakira will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the Video Music Awards 2023 on MTV on September 12. She will accept the award and perform at the ceremony for the first time since 2006.
The Colombian-born megastar is a four-time VMA winner and 30-time nominee. She won her first VMA, the International Viewer’s Choice Award-Latin America (North), in 2000 for “Eyes like that”. She got the same award in 2002 for “Whenever, Wherever/Luck” and also took the trophy for best choreography in a video for “Hips Don’t Lie” of 2006, as well as the most transcendental collaboration by “Beautiful Liar” from 2007 with Beyonce Shakira has also won three Grammy Awards and 12 Latin Grammy Awards.
The Video Vanguard Award, named after michael jacksonit was for nicki minaj last year. Past winners include Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, David Bowie, Madonna and Rihanna. The Beatles and the director of A. Hard Day’s Night, Richard Lesterthey won the award at the first VMAs in 1984.

Shakira is up for four VMAs this year: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Best Latino for “TQG” with Carol G.and Best Latin for “Acrostic”. Earlier this year, his successful collaboration with bizarre, “Music Sessions Vol. 53”set several streaming records on Spotify and YouTube.
Shakira first performed at the VMAs in 2002 with her performance of “Objection (Tango)” and was the first artist to perform a song entirely in Spanish at the ceremony along with Alejandro Sanz when they sang “Torture” in 2005.
Taylor Swift leads this year’s VMA nominations with eight, while SZA it ranks second with six nominations. Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, Olivia Rodrigo and Kim Petras each have five nominations, and blackpink and diddy tie with the four of Shakira. It has been confirmed that Demi Lovato, Karol G, Maneskin and Stray Kids will perform at the ceremony, and MTV will announce more artists soon.
