Growth: 2020 record year for the European bicycle industry

The industry has grown strongly, also and especially during the crisis year 2020. The European bicycle umbrella association Conebi supports this with figures.

As a result of the corona boom, the European bicycle industry, with 22 million units sold in 2020, had a record year like it was last 20 years ago. Sales within the European Union and in the United Kingdom as a whole increased by 40 percent to 18.3 billion euros compared to the previous year, according to a statement by the European cycling association Conebi on Tuesday. Its President Erhard Büchel blamed investments in infrastructure and political will, among other things: With 1.5 billion euros in investments, compared to just one billion in the previous year 2019, an unprecedented production growth was generated in Europe.

Despite the increase in production in the EU and the UK, the association still sees some catching up to do. «We have to invest more in local production; we have to invest more in Europe, ”said Büchel. In the field of electric bicycles, according to the information, they are already very far: of the 4.5 million pedelecs sold in the EU and the United Kingdom, 80 percent were also produced in this country.
