“The mountain rescuers”: Sebastian Ströbel is not thinking of quitting

Sebastian Ströbel has been in front of the camera for the successful ZDF series “Die Bergretter” since 2014 and there is still no end in sight.

“The mountain rescuers” take off again! The 13th season of the action-packed home series starts on November 18 (8:15 p.m.) with eight new episodes on ZDF. For main actor Sebastian Ströbel (44), the series is a real heart project. The actor has been in front of the camera as mountain rescuer Markus Kofler since 2014 and there is still no end in sight.

“So far I haven’t wasted a thought on it,” he clarifies in an interview with the news agency spot on news and explains the challenges the role brings with it – also privately. He spends several months a year filming in Austria, separated from his wife and their four daughters, who live in Hamburg.

Over five million viewers tune into “Die Bergretter” on average. What do you think makes the series so successful?

Sebastian Ströbel: The mountain, the helicopter, dense dramatic stories. The basis of the mountain rescuers is simply very authentic: You try to wrest people in need from the mountain.

You’ve been with the show since 2014, would you have thought you’d stay loyal to the series for so long?

Ströbel: It was clear to me from the start that I was part of a special project. The overall package of the series, the mix of nature, suspense, action and drama is just very strong. So I had already thought that it could be longer …

Have you ever thought about leaving?

Ströbel: Nothing is set in stone. Standing still is death, but so far I haven’t given it a thought. And yet you are constantly questioning yourself.

When the time comes, would you wish for a spectacular serial death?

Ströbel: I think so, yes. Or I just disappear and nobody knows what happened.

The series regularly delights with exciting stunts. How big is your ambition to make as many of them as possible yourself?

Ströbel: The action is one of the cornerstones for me and also one of the main reasons why I love this format so much. I need the physicality and look for the constant challenge in the action sequences.

What was the toughest stunt you’ve ever done?

Ströbel: Oh, that’s difficult to say. Deliberately dropping into a rope from a great height or jumping into cardboard boxes is always a little overcoming. And of course every helicopter rescue is challenging in some way.

How many times have you injured yourself while shooting?

Ströbel: Scratches, grazes, bruises and other wounds are part of it for me. It’s like the amen in church. That brings with it day-to-day business. But: Really what has happened to us so far, thank God, nothing yet. For us, safety is the top priority.

They have a large female fan base. Do you get a lot of declarations of love?

Ströbel: Only a few. But I get a lot of very nice letters. Declarations of love are rather rare. Or I don’t understand some messages. (laughs)

Is your wife jealous sometimes?

Ströbel: Not at all.

You spend several months a year filming in Austria. Her wife and their four daughters live in Hamburg. Doesn’t the family fall by the wayside?

Ströbel: Of course it’s tough for all of us. And of course there are times when one or the other complains. But we don’t know it any other way and we all know that it is always only for a limited time and that I am fully there again. I also try to drive home every free minute.

Would a complete move to Austria be an option?

Ströbel: I could very well imagine Vienna. Why not.

As the only man in the women’s household, are you regularly outvoted?

Ströbel: Sure. But: It has nothing to do with my gender, but with my weakness.

What is your ultimate survival tip in life as the only man in a five-woman household …

Ströbel: So far I cannot complain. But every now and then I watch a 2nd Bundesliga soccer match. Nobody wants to watch then.
