So that prams don’t become a heat trap

If parents cover the stroller with a cloth to protect them from the sun in summer, they run the risk of it becoming a dangerous heat trap for the baby. “An experiment at the Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital in Stockholm showed very clearly how at risk children are,” says Pia Neundlinger, a specialist in paediatrics at the Rohrbach Clinic. The temperature was measured in an open stroller and in a stroller that was covered for 90 minutes. The thermometer of the first stroller showed 22 degrees Celsius, the second 37 degrees. “We know a similar effect from cars, which is why children and animals should never be left alone there,” says Neundlinger. Ideal shade providers are a parasol, directly on the stroller or a kind of sun sail that is stretched over the entire stroller. So the air can continue to circulate.

The right clothing also offers good protection against overheating. Airy, light items of clothing that can be pulled on top of each other, as well as light, protective headgear, are ideal. This should also have good UV protection. “The best advice is anyway, especially with infants and small children, not to be in the blazing sun,” says Neundlinger.
