A look away from Europe towards life in Latin America: This is what the exhibition “Dualities in Equalities” is currently showing at the Lentos art museum in Linz. There are nine works by artists from the Latin American continent that came about as a result of a collaboration between Ars Electronica and the CIFO Foundation. The two institutions have jointly announced a prize for emerging artists worth a total of 55,000 dollars, the three winners of which can now be seen in Linz with six other works financed by the foundation.
One of the winners is Joaquin Aras from Argentina. His work Longings (Yira/Yira) pays homage to film pioneer Federico Valle, who produced the world’s first animated film. A fire destroyed most of the films in 1926, and he had to sell the rest to a factory that made celluloid combs because no museum wanted his films. Aras produced an experimental film from archive footage. But Aras is more than just remembering: “The example shows how we deal with our cultural treasures.”

In the foyer of the Lentos you can see a kind of wooden walkway on which pairs of ceramics seem to be crawling up. With “The Ark, let’s go back…” Natalia Espinosa recalls the biblical story of Noah’s Ark and thus warns against the destruction of the environment, as the artist from Ecuador says: “We humans have the power to save or destroy lives. All in all, the show shows how lively Latin American art is.

The exhibition “Dualities in Equalities: Art, Technology, Society in Latin America” can be seen at Lentos (lentos.at) until September 27.

This year, from September 6 to 10, the Ars Electronica Festival in Post City is asking the question, “Who owns the truth?” . Information and tickets are available at ars.electronica.art.
