The musicians announced this on Thursday at a media event and live stream in conversation with Jimmy Fallon in London’s Hackney district. It was recorded “relatively quickly”, as guitarist Ron Wood (76) said. At some point a deadline was set, added singer Mick Jagger (80).

To the long time since “A Bigger Bang”, the last one stones-Studiowerk with own songs, Mick Jagger joked: “We’re just lazy.” Addendum: “We also did a lot in between, we were also on tour.” It has long been rumored that the band is going into the studio. “Then we said we have to have everything ready by Valentine’s Day,” said Jagger. “We’re in the studio in December,” 23 songs were recorded “quickly” and “we mixed the songs in February,” says the frontman.

Twelve tracks ended up on “Hackney Diamonds”, two songs come from earlier years, on which drummer Charlie Watts, who died in 2021, can still be heard. You miss him and without his blessing “everything would be more difficult”, emphasized guitarist Keith Richards, cool as always, the only one with sunglasses. “Ever since Charlie left it’s different. He was number four (the stonesNote)” But the drummer also left something behind for the band: his successor Steve Jordan, whom Watts chose himself.

Original bassist Bill Wyman was also involved in the production. “We invited Bill into the studio. That’s what the original rhythm section is like rolling stones represented on the album,” said Jagger – at least on one song. Whether Paul McCartney can also be heard on a song, as has been rumored for weeks, has not been said. Lady Gaga provided vocals for the song “Sweet Sounds Of Heaven”.

It was a huge hoopla in Hackney, London. Fans waited outside the Hackney Empire for the stones. In the venerable theater, built in 1901 as a music hall, where Charlie Chaplin still performed, US star presenter Jimmy Fallon welcomed the three musicians. “The Ultimate Rock androllband,” gushed Fallon. “We’re here to present our new single, it’s called ‘Angry’,” were Jagger’s first words. The video was shown following the globally streamed event, with the single dropping in on Friday the trade.

When asked about “Hackney Diamonds,” Richards mused that various possible album titles had been thrown at one another. “‘Hit and Run’, ‘Smash and Grab’ – and somewhere in between we came up with ‘Hackney Diamonds’. Also, we’re a British band.” Jagger explained the album title was “slang for smashed car windows”.

Jagger went on to say about the making of the record: “Keith and I played with ideas in Jamaica,” then it went to New York, “that’s where Ronnie came in.” They finally recorded it in Los Angeles. “It’s fun being in the studio together,” Richards whispered. “Playing live is the other holy grail.”

The three Britons presented themselves in a good mood, especially with fan questions that Fallon sent, they joked. which his favoritestones-Song be? “I don’t have one,” Jagger said dryly. Richards called “Gimme Shelter” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” after a long grumble. And then Jagger intoned “Off The Hook” and briefly brought the concert atmosphere into the hall. One fan asked what the secret of a long marriage is, given that Richards and Jagger have been together for so long. “Not talking to each other too much,” Jagger smirked at Richards. And it was learned that Jagger, Richards and Wood are bad dart players.

Over the past few years, it has repeatedly been said that the band wants to go into the studio. In December 2016, Jagger and company released the studio work Blue & Lonesome, covering 12 blues songs. The album was treated as a “warm-up exercise” for the next production with their own songs. Proving that the group, formed in 1962, can still churn out great songs, “Doom & Gloom” and “One More Shot” (recorded for a 2012 compilation) and the lockdown song “Living In A Ghost Town” proved it.

An advertisement for the fictitious glass repair company “Hackney Diamonds” in the London local newspaper “Hackney Gazette” provided the first indications that an album was now getting serious. The text of the advertisement played on the stones-Hits “Satisfaction”, “Gimme Shelter” and “Shattered”. Projections of the famous followed in several cities stonestongue – for example at the Vienna City Hall Square.

The advert in the Gazette gave a London phone number as the contact. When calling, an announcement is heard: “Welcome to Hackney Diamonds, glass repair specialists. We will open in early September, Mare Street, E8. Register to call at www.hackneydiamonds.com. Come on!” Mare Street is a real street in the Hackney district of London, where, among other things, the Hackney Empire Theater is located, where the stones finally announced details about the album.

“Hackney Diamonds” appears in several formats. The record can be pre-ordered now.
