Actress Emmanuelle Béart was a victim of incest as a child: she was abused by a family member for four years.
She is one of the most well-known film stars in France, won a César, the European film award and starred alongside Tom Cruise (61) in “Mission Impossible”. Now the actress Emmanuelle Béart (60) speaks for the first time about the worst experience of her childhood: she was abused by a family member for years.
The occasion is the TV documentary “A Noisy Silence”, which Béart co-directed. In it, four women report what happened to them as incest victims. “Her courage and honesty made me want to share my story, too,” Béart said in the documentary.
Her parents didn’t notice
For four years, between the ages of 10 and 14, she was regularly abused by a member of her family. “Since my father, my mother and my friends didn’t notice, you could do it again and again, and you did it, for four years,” Béart’s voice is heard in the documentary. According to the 60-year-old, her grandmother finally saved her.
The actress does not reveal who her tormentor was, only that it was not her father. Béart grew up as the daughter of singer Guy Béart (1930-2015) and his wife, ex-model Geneviève Galéa (80), with a total of seven half-siblings.
Co-director Anastasia Mikova (41) explained at the presentation of the film in Neuilly-sur-Seine (France) that Béart did not want to name the family member because that was “not the approach of the film”.
“A Noisy Silence” will be shown on September 24 on French TV channel M6.
