Great honor for Shirley Bassey: As the first female solo artist, the British Post Office is releasing a stamp collection for her.
Will these stamps turn into gold for the British Post Office? Her recent publication of a stamp collection is sure to make fans of Dame Sharley Bassey (86) smile. , the collection with motifs from the world-famous Welsh “Goldfinger” singer, which is now being published, is the first ever to honor a female British solo musician – and is therefore long overdue, after all, the British post office was founded by Henry VIII in 1516.
First female solo artist with her own brand collection
“Goldfinger!” – then trombone sound that goes to the core. Anyone who doesn’t immediately hear Sharley Bassey’s best-known song from the 1964 Bond film of the same name ringing through their ears when her name is mentioned has probably slept through the last six decades and is definitely not a Bond fan.
Dame Sharley Bassey, born in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay district in 1937, can look back on an incredible 70 years in show business. Reason enough for the British Royal Mail to launch a series of eight stamps with Bassey motifs from different decades of her career.
While this honor has already been bestowed upon her by the outstanding British solo artists David Bowie (1947-2016), Sir Elton John (76) and Sir Paul McCartney (81), Dame Shirley Bassey is the first female solo artist to receive her own little one Brand series. And the show grand dame is particularly pleased about this: “The stamps are wonderful. And I hope my fans and all collectors like them as much as I do.”
70 years of show business and three Bond theme tunes
70 years of show business, 70 years of fascination with a unique voice. For seven decades, Dame Shirley Bassey not only thrilled concertgoers all over the world. For many fans, she is the epitome of the interpreter of a James Bond song. Since 1964, she has set standards for theme songs with her legendary “Goldfinger” melody. In 1971, “Diamonds are forever”, the title song for the Bond film “Diamond Fever”, followed. In 1979 she completed her Bond trilogy with “Moonraker”.
Dame Shirley Bassey can be seen on the eight stamps during performances on a TV show in 1963, in a London nightclub in 1965, at the opening of the Rugby World Cup in 1999 and at the Oscars in 2013. The brands go on sale from September 21st.
“Where are you, when do we meet?” sings Dame Bassey in the “Moonraker” title ballad. Soon the mundane answer for all British stamp fans will be: at the nearest post office counter. For everyone else, the brands can be ordered online.
